Is it selfish to consider having a child when...

We once had neighbors who were a young couple with two young children. The father found out he had Huntington's Disease. It is a terrible disease which affects balance, cognitive functions, depth perception and more. These symptoms get progressively worse throughout the disease.

These neighbors went on to have two more children! This is a hereditary disease. The average life expectancy of the patient once the disease has been diagnosed is about 15 years. 15 YEARS!

In good conscience I could NOT bring an innocent child into this world with a risk for this disease.

Now to my question:

Would you have a child if you or your partner had Huntington's or another hereditary disease?

10 Crazy things I learned about Alaska

I watching Alaska State Troopers and was wowed by the state of Alaska. I decided to share some fun facts.

1. Alaska is twice the size of Texas, meaning that if Alaska's land area were divided in half then Texas would become the third largest state, rather than the second largest in the USA. Woah!

2. Dear Minnesota, I know you're proud of your 10,000 lakes. There are more than three million in Alaska. Sincerely, me

3. In 2007 the Alaska State Troopers based at the Bethel post made 898 arrests – that’s more than the two previous years combined. Good gosh! What is going up there in??!

4. Of approximately 200 rural Alaskan communities, 136 are “dry,” meaning it is illegal to import, produce, sell or drink alcohol there. HUGE fines & jail time time, too!

5. A bottle of whiskey that sells for $10 in Anchorage will run $300 in a dry Alaskan village. Forget the snowshoes I was planning to buy. I am saving for a bottle of &%#*@ whiskey!

6. There is no road system in Western Alaska, so traveling between villages and cities is possible only by aircraft, watercraft, 4 wheelers & snow machines!

7. In some parts of Alaska it is REQUIRED State troopers have a flying permit. They then travel between villages by air to do their rounds. Awesome, right?

8. In Alaska, there are thought to be over 30,000 grizzly bears. It's no wonder they have a no permit required CCW.

9. Alaska came in #1 with the highest rate in suicide: 22.1 suicides per 100,000 with New Mexico coming in second. Yikes!

10. In the northern slopes of remote Alaskan villages or even on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea you can be expected to pay upwards of $15 for a gal. of milk and $5 for a loaf of bread. Should I keep going with the grocery list?

My brother & his wife had a baby girl the other day. They delivered Ava about a month early due to complications. I have seen pictures & she is adorable. Unsure when she'll get to join her family at home. She is still in the hospital.

She is such a talker. I just sit back & observe.

Spring Break is over

Mel went back to school today.

She is waiting for the bus in the snow that dumped on us over night.

On the flip side she had a nice spring break. Plenty of relaxing and t.v. time.

Her & I had a sleepfest in the living room for 5 nights. Stayed up late watching movies & eating snacks all while cuddled up in our bed we made on the floor.

Her cousin came over for one night then Mel went over to her house the following night.

This elderly woman at work has passed away. She couldn't talk. Or communicate much for that matter. She would spend days and days awake in her wheelchair. Then when she finally slept she would sleep for days. Over and over again. She was always itchy. Scratching everywhere! A couple weeks ago I lotioned her up, put dry conditioner in her hair. Tried to scratch her back & cleaned her well, to relieve the itchiness. Then retrieved help for her cuts from scratching. Is it so terrible to be relieved she doesn't have to suffer anymore? It is sad when people get to the point where they can't help themselves. My grandma was fortunate to be able to live on her own & drive a car right up until 2 weeks before she died. Maybe it'll be inherited ;)

It is snowing. It is beautiful, but I am ready for it to be done. I am dreaming of summer. We need 20 or so more inches to beat last winter's snow accumulation.

I threw my back out last week. It is painful. Although, that same day I had been sitting in the dentists' chair with a throbbing toothache. I would much rather live with this back pain than a toothache. It was awful. Which got me to thinking. I wonder if there is a connection between my lower back pain and sitting in the dental chair on that day. I was extremely tense as he shot 8 numbing needles into my mouth. I am not afraid of needles nor the dentist, so I don't understand why I tense up to an extreme. I thought I was going to pass out because I was so insanely tense. It was certainly a strange feeling. So I am thinking... while I tensed up I may have injured my back?

I chose to review a Bissell sweeper for my CSNstores review. I have always wanted one since working in the restaurant industry. I loved using them.

My Bissell sweeper was shipped out from CSNstores the very next day after I ordered it.

It came in a small package.

The base is a pretty blue in color.

I was able to put this together myself!

This is a kitchen rug with specks of debri on it. Unfortunately, I forgot to take an after picture.

However, with just a few swipes with the Bissell the whole rug was clean of debri!

This is the debri in the trays. There are two.

Then you simply pour the debri in a trash can.

The flaps are easy to open.

I love this because it does not require a plug, batteries or cords. This works on both solid surfaces and carpets.

I wrote a blog right after Christmas about an elderly resident at work(in a nursing home)

who didn't realize Christmas had past.

She told me she was losing her mind and was shocked she had missed Christmas.

Sadly, this woman passed away the other day.

She was 99 years old!

It's the littlest things in life that truly make an impact on me.

That special talk we had in the early morning hours after Christmas.

The look in her eyes. The disappointment. The sadness.

It wasn't a good moment in my life but it meant something.

All I could do is be with her at that moment of confusion.

Last month I did a quick blog about csnstores.com about my upcoming review I was going to do. Well, the time has come. It took me literally days to choose something to review. I could not decide. I finally chose an item that would be useful for this rental home.

I counted out the pieces.

YES! All here.

Get husband to help put together. Check.

We are currently renting.

The space is limited.

Our pots/pans & baking sheets cupboard was overflowing.

Ta da! I LOVE my hanging rack!

It came with plenty of hooks to hang more pots as well.

*The only complaint from my husband as he hung the rack--it was difficult to fit the screw driver in areas to screw in the screws to the wall.

She couldn't hear me so I said "the day after Christmas".

She glared at me for a moment before asking "did you just say it was the day after Christmas?".

"Yes" I said.

"I have lost my mind" she said sadly.

A minute later she asked again "it's really the day after Christmas?"

I said "yes" nodding my head assuringly.

Then again she repeated "I have lost my mind".

Ahhhhhhhh!!

I live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We obviously get a ton of snow up here. Outdoor snow activities are a part of most everyones lives here all winter. A long winter. Snowmobiling is huge here. I picked all these off of polyvore. You can find them there. I need shoes to wear to my sisters wedding in a couple of weeks. These are what I have in mind. Tacky? Maybe. I like them & they would go with my dress. Also a plus, some of them can help secure the ankle which I like. I cannot afford any of these but I do the bargains & knock offs anyway.

We made a Dream Catcher!

Melody's Dream Catcher

first we had Melody's daddy make a hoop out of a wire hanger

Then I wound yarn around the hoop about 10 or so times to cover the hoop. I hot glued the yard to the wire every so often.

as you can see we wound beads & lots of yarn & sparkly strap around the hoop. Melody's daddy took her to the Dollar Tree to look for feathers. They couldn't find any but DID find a feather duster. Voila! We went bananas....as you can see.

next I tied yard, then Mel added beads & made the feather clusters. I hot glued the feather clusters and beads to the yarn & the next bead. Yeah--you could never tell. If you even caught that.

as you can obviously see...she is very happy with the result. It was Melody's idea to hang the dream catcher this way. I was going to do it the traditional way. It is hung right above her head. No scary dreams for her anymore!

How to make Kid's Bathtub Paint

you need an ice cube tray or maybe cupcake pan

Mix Together with mixer:

(I recommend doubling the recipe)

1/3 dishsoap or liquid baby bath

1 Tlbs. cornstarch

then pour into ice cube tray cups about 1/2 full

pour desired drops of food coloring into each cup

stir with toothpicks

It was messy & took about 15 mins. for us. My daughter had fun stirring the colors.

I looked at a few sites to get an idea of how to make this. tinyeinsteins is one.
